Please give a brief description of the work you intend to exhibit specifying materials and size.

Work:
Untitled, HD video projection

My work has explored the relationship between our place and us as humans and animals on the earth. Currently, the work has used the component of the earth as a literal “grounding” and concentrated on land dwelling creatures.
For degree show, I am expanding this topic into looking at the earth in a celestial context. To do this I am pushing my work to investigate into humans as “living under the same sky” as the animals rather than “sharing the same earth”.
Shooting in HD (1080i), and angling the camera upward, I took a watching position in a free flying bird enclosure. In shot is the warehouse-like roof, which cuts of the birds from the sky they are idealistically associated with. A man-made obstacle fencing off nature, controlling where it exists.
Occasionally, you see the birds flitting across the footage. The sightings off them are uncommon and often obstructed by the tropical plants used to create their unnatural natural environment.
The work would be exhibited by projecting the footage onto the ceiling of the gallery space, replicating the=he angle it was filmed at and immersing the viewer by raising their eye level. The existence of the birds in the gallery space would echo the unnatural environment they were filmed in.
Artists I have researched include Dalziel and Scullion and their works scratch and raptor, both of which are animals placed in human habitats and filmed. I have also contextualised my work among issues concerning the changing natural world.

Potential secondary piece:
May produce a series of photographic still, which I am experimenting with which comments on the same relationship but these are a maybe and not a definite,

Please give a brief account of the main themes in your work and how these are contained in the final show?
Nature contained in a human environment(the birds in a zoo with the physical world outside of it) further compressed via digital imaging. By being shown in a gallery it opens it back out into a space containing nature with a natural environment outside. So its natural but still separated from the natural. Through the viewer, it is opened out fully in the viewers mind to make them think about the outside natural world
Like showing a mirror to a mirror and getting everlasting reflections. But in this case the original image flips and pushes back out; a refracted reflection. One end got nature going into man made and other end it man going into nature.
Echoing how the natural environment is being further and further reduced but can still exist through us mentally.
